the shores that i kiss
are made out of sadness.
they pollute me.
there is oil in my hair and
i'm choking on bottle caps,
$1.25 to clear your throat,
but it never does.
this is the very proof
of my shame, the product
of the never ending desire.
they're always telling you
to buy happiness, they say,
"buy just one, this is all you
need," and the fool that
i am, i believed them.
there is no dishsoap
that can clean away the things
i wish i didn't see when
i look at my reflection.

hmmm...so it's certainly sad, that's obvious. And it certainly feels like you're using the environment as a metaphor. There's a bunch of romantic references so I'm tempted to put my chips on that. But the final stanza implies that it's yourself that you're having trouble with.
just working through it out loud here. but from a general perspective, this is interesting and cryptic.
the only romantic reference, however, would be the romance between a person and their sadness. it is the emotion we often go back to when we are alone. it is the lover we can't leave be. we come back and we come back and we make it sound so lovely sometimes. but it's really not. it's oil spills and choking on bottle caps.
at the end of the day, it's always ourselves we battle with. more than any other thing.
