Literature Text

We were sitting on a bench
in the middle of the cemetery,
watching the sun paint the sky.

We were talking about leaving,
calling it quits on this old town,
leaving smothering households
and living each in our own
European country,

and I can’t remember why,
but you started laughing.
It was the best laugh I’ve ever heard.

It was the kind of laugh
that starts deep in your stomach
and rumbles its way up
into your shoulders, shaking
the bench we were sitting on,
and your eyes crinkled up
as you threw your head back.

For a moment, you decided
that none of it mattered
and you were happy.
